Telegram Communities: The End of Standalone Chats?
In the past, organizing a project in Telegram meant creating dozens of separate groups and channels, then distributing invitations manually. Newcomers got lost, while administrators spent time managing access. Communities make all of that a thing of the past. A single community can now bring together any combination of public and private chats, news channels, and assistant bots. Members immediately see every room available to them and can join without extra steps—no links, no approvals.
In the chat list, a community is flexible: users can collapse it into a single item or keep its chats displayed separately—it is entirely up to them. Administrators get a permissions panel: some chats can be open to everyone, while others remain hidden from outsiders, such as moderators or Premium subscribers. By default, any member can create new chats within the community. When stricter organization is needed, administrators can disable this permission, allowing members only to suggest new rooms while leaving the final decision to the admin.
For organizers, this removes routine work: there is no need to send hundreds of invitations or oversee user migration. Configure the structure once, and it runs on its own. For members, it means straightforward navigation: there is no need to remember where the discussion chat link is or where to find the announcements channel. Everything is available in one unified space.
Telegram is effectively catching up with Discord and Slack in community organization, but it does so within the familiar interface of a messenger, lowering the barrier to entry for an audience of millions.
Editor: When a Message Becomes an Article
The second major addition is a visual editor for long-form posts. It lets users format text with headings, tables, bulleted lists, quotes, and code blocks, as well as place images and videos directly within the text. The limit is 32,768 characters—enough for detailed instructions, reviews, or even book chapters.
The editor is designed for both smartphone screens and desktop monitors, with a consistent interface across devices. Built-in AI powered by the decentralized Cocoon network can help generate text, tables, or formulas, while all processing remains confidential—the data is not sent to external servers.
For now, the feature is available only to Premium subscribers. Its creators openly describe it as a paid tool. For people who run blogs, publish reviews, or share analysis, it can be a worthwhile investment: there is no need to switch to Medium or Notion, because everything can be created inside Telegram and delivered directly to subscribers. For regular users, it is another reason to consider Premium, while the feature itself is helping create a new class of content creators within the ecosystem.
Bots Stop Cluttering Chats
The third change concerns how bots interact with users in groups. Previously, every bot response—a greeting, menu, error message, or verification result—appeared in the public chat. In large communities, this turned the feed into a jumble of service messages that drowned out real conversation.
Bots can now reply privately, only to the person who contacted them. Other members see neither the request nor the response. Commands that trigger these replies are marked with a special icon in the bot menu and remain invisible to everyone else as well.
What does this change? For administrators, it keeps chats clean: there is no longer any need to delete bot spam manually. Bots can still handle useful tasks—checking order status, providing personalized guidance, or running polls—without disrupting the conversation. The group can return to its primary purpose: dialogue between people.
Developers gain access to new use cases: disappearing or persistent private notifications, interactive games with personalized hints, and confidential alerts. This increases the value of bots as part of the infrastructure and reduces the burden on moderators.
Private GIF Search
It may seem like a small detail, but it matters in everyday use. Telegram has updated its GIF panel: the database now contains more than 350 million animations in 36 languages. Search is faster thanks to offline indexing of popular files using open AI models. Most importantly, search queries never leave the app. Unlike other messengers that send data to GIPHY and similar services, Telegram keeps everything within its own environment.
Users get two benefits at once: faster search and preserved privacy. No one can see which GIFs you search for or send. For anyone who cares about digital privacy and good security habits, that is a compelling advantage.
The Bigger Picture: Telegram as a Platform for Projects
Put the four changes together. Communities provide structure, the editor provides a content tool, private bots keep chats quiet, and faster GIF search adds emotional expression. Together, they move Telegram beyond the “talk and forget” model. It is now an environment where projects of any scale can operate—from a small interest-based club to a large business with thousands of members, channels for different audience segments, and bot-powered automation.
Organizers gain a single control center, members get clear navigation, and bots stop getting in the way. A Premium subscription becomes more than a collection of perks; it becomes a gateway to professional capabilities. This is a deliberate move by the developers, combining service improvements with monetization.
The update further solidifies Telegram’s status as a self-contained ecosystem capable of replacing a stack of several different apps. And as the creators wryly noted, summer may be overrated—but now there is at least one reason to spend it exploring new features.
